SHOT HERE – Map of New York's Most Famous TV & Movie Locations
Released and available in New York City
Tour Manhattan and visit the actual spots where your favorite movies and TV shows have been filmed
NEW YORK, March 14, 2001…In the city considered to be the world's most famous back lot, Merchant Publishing has just released a map aimed at the thousands of tourists who visit this great city each year, and for the movie buffs who already live here. What makes this map unique is that it pinpoints actual locations where famous movies and TV shows have been shot. For example using this map, one could visit the spot where Harry met Sally, have lunch where the guys from Wall Street hatched their plan, or eat in the diner where the gang from Seinfeld would meet in that great "show about nothing".
The map features 151 locations, each with a brief description of the scene that took place. Each listing corresponds to a numbered marker on the map, making it easy to plan your tour. Also included is a fully detailed street map and lists of the subway line nearest to each location.
An idea that started by accident
"I have always loved movies and always loved New York," says Michael Kanbar, President of Merchant Publishing. "Friends from out of town would come to visit and I'd take them for long walks to show them the ‘real' New York. I'd find myself pointing out the landmark locations from famous movies, and I found that my friends loved that. I thought that making a map of these locations so that everybody could enjoy visiting these spots would be fun, so I did."
Kanbar's office in Greenwich Village, which always has a steady stream of characters flowing in and out, acted as the gathering point for the information which eventually made it's way into the map. "I told everyone what I was doing, then I put up a big blackboard and asked anyone who thought of a location to write it down. It turned into a sort of social event, we'd sit around eating pizza and talking movies, it was great."
Sales have started in anticipation of the busy tourist season. Shot Here was just picked up by a major distributor, and the future looks good. "People seem to really like it," says Kanbar "we've had orders from as far away as Hawaii. Just the other day I saw a family in Washington Square Park with the map open and pointing at the arch where Harry met Sally. It was just so cool to see people getting a thrill out of this. It gave me bit of a thrill too."
And there are more to come….
The fun of creating Shot Here has inspired Kanbar to roll out other specialty maps. He won't tell us what the new titles are yet, but he does tell us that they'll all keep within the New York theme, and they'll all be a lot of fun. "There's just so much to do and see in this city, and I want our maps to help tourists and locals have a good time."
